Whoever wrote these questions sucks at polling, and the questions are badly worded. For example, answering yes to this:
Quote
Should public school students be taught that the book of Genesis in the Bible explains how God created the world?
Yes 77
No 15
Not Sure 8
does not mean that public school students should be taught that evolution is incorrect or anything of the sort. Answering "yes" does not even mean that you support the "intelligent design" approach to teaching origins. I'd vote "yes" to this, and I oppose teaching any kind of creation in science classes, and firmly believe that evolution should be taught in biology -- but I firmly believe we ought to discuss these things in a philosophy class, or other appropriate setting. If you walk out of your high school diploma in hand, and you don't understand at least the rudiments of the most popular beliefs held by people of your time, then your schooling has failed you.
Then there's this question:
Quote
Are marrigiages equal partnerships, or are men the leaders of their households?
Men 13
Equal 76
Not Sure 11
The question is phrased descriptively, but DailyKOS intentionally twists it in their report to sound prescriptive. This is pretty common with hackjob reporters who pick up a few tidbits here and there and misinterpret them, but what tickles me is that DailyKOS seems to have commissioned the poll to begin with. Personally, I'd answer "not sure" to this since I'm not familiar with most people's marriages. I suspect that there are plenty of self-identified feminists who would answer "men," since they believe that women are still not treated equally. That does not mean that they think that this is right. What's more, the question does not even consider the possibility that women might be leaders of households.
Finally, you describe these numbers as proving Republicans are a "bunch of lunatic sheep," without explaining what the threshold is for inferring that from these data, without seeing any data to compare these questions or similar questions to the general public, and without defining what specifically it means to be a "bunch of lunatic sheep." I suspect that a similarly shoddy poll could be constructed to demonize democrats, greens, guys named Jeff, people who drive white cars, or any other group of people.
